It has been a while since the ancient community of Gid-Gid has been without a leader, its royal throne empty, and the palace doors locked. The leadership tussle that erupted following the passing of the former Ra'an Gid-Gid, His Royal Highness Ragai, has left the community in a precarious state. The royal family's inability to resolve this dispute, coupled with endless court cases, has created a vacuum unbefitting of such a prominent and historic community.
In African tradition, a king is not just a ruler but the custodian of the people’s heritage, the guardian of their values, and the symbol of their unity. As the wise Akan proverb goes, "The ruin of a nation begins in the homes of its people." How then can Gid-Gid, a land steeped in tradition and dignity, remain without its guiding compass? The current stalemate is a blemish on the pride of Gid-Gid. A locked palace speaks of division, and an empty throne whispers of neglect. Our forefathers said, "When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers." This leadership vacuum is not just a burden on the royal family but a wound on the entire community.
The time has come for the kingmakers, the elders, and the stakeholders to rise to their responsibilities. Let them sit together in wisdom, guided by the spirit of unity and the voices of our ancestors. Let them remember the Hausa saying, "Mutum ba ya zama sarki a kabari" — no one becomes king in the grave.
Leadership is not about personal ambition but about service to the people. Gid-Gid deserves a king who embodies the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of its people. It deserves a leader who will rekindle the flames of its heritage and carry the community forward with dignity and strength.
To the elders, we say, “Let the talks begin, and let wisdom prevail.” To the royal family, we remind, "A family that is united in the house will never fear the storm outside." And to the people of Gid-Gid, let us hold fast to our faith and unity, for the heart of the community beats strongest in its people.
It is time to reopen the palace gates and crown a new Ra'an who will lead Gid-Gid into a future of prosperity and peace. The throne must not remain empty, for an empty throne is an empty legacy.
